Railroad Lawsuit - Leukemia Caused by Benzene
A railroad worker who was diagnosed with leukemia as a result of exposure to toxic chemicals has been awarded $7.5 million in a verdict of a jury. He worked for two railroad companies, and was exposed to Benzene which is carcinogen.

The plaintiff's work required him to handle creosote coated ties and equipment. He claimed that the chemical was covering his entire body from head to toe.
Benzene
Benzene is one of many dangerous chemicals that have been discovered to cause cancer. It is a recognized carcinogen that is found in diesel exhaust fumes which railroad workers are frequently exposed to. The exposure to benzene is associated with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and Hodgkin lymphoma, among other blood cancers.
Railroad workers are usually exposed to a range of carcinogens while working on the job, including creosote and diesel exhaust. While many railway employees receive workers' compensation, the benefits could not cover all the costs and losses of a victim. A benzene lawsuit against a railroad could assist plaintiffs in recovering damages that are not covered by workers' compensation.
The widow of railroad worker John Thompson won a benzene settlement against his employer. Her husband was a maintenance of right employee for the Chicago and North Western Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad from 1976 until 2008. He was exposed to a variety of petroleum solvents, including creosote that contained benzene distilates of coal tar naphtha, naphtha and paint strippers. During his career, John suffered from multiple types of cancer, including one type of leukemia known as myelodysplastic. John passed away in November 2009 from this type of cancer. The settlement awarded by the jury was $7 million. This sum covers a significant portion of his medical bills, lost income and pain and discomfort.
Creosote
Creosote contains a number of chemicals, such as dioxin, pentachlorophenol and polycyclic hydrocarbons. Long-term exposure may cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Skin cancer and a leukemia-like illness called acute myeloid leukemia are also linked to long-term exposure to creosote.
Creosote is absorbed into the body via the lungs via air pollution through the stomach and intestines through eating or drinking polluted water or in contact with the skin. It is absorbed quickly through the skin. Exposure to this mixture can cause damage to the kidneys, liver and central nervous system. The toxic mix can be absorbed by the eye and cause a variety of illnesses.

Bladder cancer lawsuit of asbestos to make railroad materials was commonplace over the years. Bladder cancer lawsuit were exposed to dangerous asbestos dust while working in steam trains and around them, or inside repair shops. The asbestos particles were frequently taken home with the hair and clothing of workers and exposed their family members to the deadly material.
Despite the dangers of asbestos exposure, many railroad companies did not recognize or even deny the possibility of harm to workers' health for decades. As a result, some railroad workers who had an asbestos-related cancer diagnosis later in life did not receive sufficient compensation from their employers.
Asbestos claims differ from other claims for workers' compensation due to their complexity. Railroad workers might be able to claim compensation under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA).
